The German Airship Hindenburg Explodes Into Flames

On May 6, 1937 the German airship the Hindenberg was completing its trans-Atlantic flight to the Lakehurst, NJ Naval Air Station.

At 7:25 PM as the ship was near the mooring tower it caught fire and was completely engulfed in flames within minutes slowly crashing to the ground.

Of the 97 aboard the craft 37 perished as well as a ground crewman.

As is always the case in on scene reporting of disasters, being in the right place at the right time is sheer luck.

This was the case for Chicago's WLS reporter Herb Morrison whose recorded description of the disaster is among the most famous radio news recordings ever made. Morrison's account was not carried live when the Hindenburg came to its end on that fateful day but aired the next day.

While spectacular photos and film were taken of the disaster it's Morrison's "oh the humanities" which has become synonymous with the Hidenburg crashing down in flames.
