Look Up In The Sky It's A Bird It's A Plane It's Superman

I could have done the first posting about The Golden Age of Radio Shows on any number of subjects.

How radio networks came to be, newscasters, famous events and more.

But when I found the audio of the first The Adventures of Superman show on YouTube I just had to lead with it.

The show began on New York City's WOR 710 on February 12th 1940 and ran through March 1 1951.

The show was 15 minutes long and became syndicated by the Mutual Broadcasting System on August 31, 1942 through February 4, 1949. The serial then shifted over to ABC and there ran as a 30 minute program October 29, 1949 until its end in 1951.

Bud Collyer, who later went on to do television some will remember at the host of game shows, portrayed Superman from the beginning of the serial until 1950. Michael Fitzmaurice took over as the Man of Steel in 1950 until the show went off the air.

There were three "narrators" in all, George Lowther 1940 - 1942, Jackson Beck, perhaps the most famous for his delivery of the three 1943 - 1951 and Ross Martin in 1951. Martin would go on to play Artemus Gordon in the hit CBS-TV show The Wild, Wild West.

So why pick The Adventures of Superman for a first subject. Well as a kid I grew up watching the show on TV and was delighted to find the audio below and had it been another time, imagine myself sitting by the radio listening to the adventures of "my hero".

Even more significant now, with the latest movie, "Man of Steel", coming out. I've been a fan of Supes since I was a kid, having watched the George Reeves TV incarnation, then all the Chris Reeves movies. There were also movie serials during the 40's and a weekly newspaper comic strip, in addition to the comic books that I devoured as a kid. Great post!
